History of the organization

The origin of The Five County Building Officials Association (FBOA) dates back to the 1950's, but it wasn't always known by that name. It began as the Tri-County Building Officials Association (TBOA) founded by Ohio building inspectors who saw the need for uniform codes for Summit, Medina, and Portage Counties. The founders fulfilled that need by working together with building contractors to produce the Tri-County Building Code. In an effort to promote statewide code uniformity, TBOA was also instrumental in helping to form the Ohio Building Officials Association (OBOA). Since then, they have officially added two counties - Wayne and Stark and a regional monthly newsletter, changed their name, added seminars and more than 250 members from fourteen different counties. FBOA is now one of nine regional chapters of OBOA and your membership in the regional chapters includes a membership to OBOA. In April 1989 FBOA became BOCA charter chapter 49. In 1993 and again in 1999 FBOA sponsored the 3 rd and 9 th annual OBOA-FBOA joint conferences in Akron and Canton respectively. In an average year, FBOA provides some 1,200 member hours in training and continuing education programs. This training and education lie at the heart of the chapter's purpose. FBOA members have contributed their time and talents in State and National organizations for code development, seminars, state regulations, etc. FBOA contributes annually to the scholarship funds of local universities for students who are majoring in Architecture, Engineering, or Building Technology.
